The news of the death was announced by Bill Scheft, a friend of Belzer’s who was working on a documentary about his life.

Although the cause of death is unknown, Belzer had been dealing with respiratory and circulatory issues.

Richard Belzer was an actor and comedian who passed away at age 78. He was known for his iconic character, John Munch, on the TV show, “Homicide: Life on the Street” and “Law & Order: SVU.”

Belzer had played the role of Munch for over 20 years, appearing in 10 different TV series, including guest appearances on popular shows like “30 Rock” and “Arrested Development.”

The wisecracking detective was known for his quick wit, acerbic humor, and conspiracy theories.

Belzer was not initially considered for the role, but after being heard on “The Howard Stern Show,” executive producer Barry Levinson invited him to audition for the part.

Belzer once said that playing Munch was a dream come true, as the character’s anti-establishment views and paranoia aligned with his own beliefs.
