On April 20, 2022, Stephanie Melgoza got involved in a fatal crash outside a bar in East Peoria. At the time, she was speeding three times more than the legal limit after drinking. The accident resulted in death of a couple from Lorain Country.

In a recent hearing of the case that had been going on since April 2022, Stephanie Melgoza pleaded guilty to two counts- aggravated DUI, and aggravated reckless driving. WIth this, she was sentenced to 14 years in prison.
Although, she could face up to 28 years of imprisonment, Tazewell Country Judge Tim Cusack reduced it to just 14 years because of exceptional circumstances shown by Melgoza on why she should not go to jail.
